BIO:

Sandra Robertson is resident mosaic artist at Studio OzMosaics; a home-based studio in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. OzMosaics is owned and by Sandy and her husband David and it’s often mosaics 24-7, as OzMosaics houses a fully-equipped mosaic workshop, mosaic studio, mosaic Studio Store & Dave runs the OzMosaics web shop.
For over 20 years, Sandy has been spellbound by mosaics and totally addicted to mosaics. Her mosaic commissions are installed in private homes & gardens, communities, schools & the public sector. Many mosaic murals depict local stories, centenaries, historical events and installations include Australia Zoo, Christmas Is, Norfolk Is, Marian Valley, University of Queensland, Woorabinda, Hong Kong and many Queensland country towns and schools.

Sandy’s mosaics are diverse in design, including both modern & traditional techniques. Sandy combines new and recycled materials such as slate, china, crockery, smalti, glass, found objects, rocks, rusty metals, shells, bottles, leather, laces and memorabilia.  Substrates include hand-formed mosaic mats and 3D sculptures.

Sandy uses thinset adhesive as “more than a glue” for special effects such as piping, layering, painting, rendering, unusual tesserae and moulds.  Known for her mosaic innovation and specialty mosaic tips and tricks, students travel from far and near to attend OzMosaics workshops in Brisbane, for mosaic inspiration and professional tuition.

Often found passionately working on community art projects, Sandy shares the joy of mosaics, forming friendships, sharing skills, providing hands-on art therapy and recycling materials into mosaic vistas. She is inspired by nature, whimsy, her four grandsons and travel.

PRESENTATION: My Double Lockdown/Isolation Whammy

I thought I had met my mosaic Waterloo when injured with a serious Lisfranc foot injury in 2019 –  then Covid 19 followed, adding it’s woe.
Both were life changing for my mosaic practice and personal life.
With the huge physical recovery and mental challenges came growth, mosaic innovation and new mosaic horizons for OzMosaics.  Revolution and Evolution!
My story shows how a Community Volunteer Mosaic Art From The Heart program, a generous mosaic art gift, mosaic art therapy and caring for others brings so many unexpected blessings and happiness during COVID 19 beyond.
As we share we grow together.
