Letters form words, which form sentences, then paragraphs, and ultimately entire texts — in the same way that tesserae form lines, which form shapes, which tell stories and communicate ideas. The character of each tessera, and its placement within space, allows us to create a multitude of different effects, much like languages have dialects, accents and slang. Grammar and typography govern how we arrange words into text and determine how easy or hard it is to read and understand. This course explores how texture, spacing, and dimension, layered over the basic principles of andamento, give lines, and therefore our mosaics, very different characteristics, or accents.

Basic mosaic tools required. List to follow.

Session: AWWA1 Fading away: The ins and outs of gradations in mosaic with Anabella Wewer
When: Friday 13 December 2024
9:00am – 5:30pm including breaks (1 day of 8 hours)
Where: Victoria Park Centre for the Arts, East Victoria Park, WA | Host: Margaret Waterton
Session type: Hands on | Max no of students: 15 with assistant | Level: All Levels
Cost:  $420 (including $120 materials fee). Morning tea provided BYO lunch.

Successful execution of colour gradations in mosaic can affect dimensionality in pictorial mosaics, aid in story telling in representational or abstract works, or stand alone as beautiful gradients of colour. This one-day workshop is designed to focus narrowly on the study of a small segment of colour theory: tints and shades, and looks at how to successfully combine traditional and uncommon materials as tesserae to achieve the desired results. The course will approach gradations from different points of view, also considering reflectivity, density of colour, and tesserae dimension to create more evocative mosaics.

Session: AWWA2 Nature as Muse with Anabella Wewer
When: Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December 2024
9:00am – 5:30pm including breaks (16 hours over 2 days)
Where: Victoria Park Centre for the Arts, East Victoria Park, WA | Host: Margaret Waterton
Session type: Hands on | Max no of students: 15 with assistant | Level: All Levels
Cost:  $675 (including $100 materials fee). Morning tea provided, BYO lunch

Artists have been re-interpreting nature for millennia. In this workshop students will learn to critically analyse images taken from nature and use them as springboards to creating abstract mosaics.

Participants will be guided through applying design principles to identify focal and perspective points, and consider the usage of space, line and materials in creating compositions that stand alone as engaging non-objective works.

The resulting mosaics may retain a connection to the original images, or may instead become true abstractions, with no tangible relationship to the original beyond the use of the inherent balance found in nature to achieve a new kind of compelling composition.

We will also analyse extreme close-ups, aerial and space images to identify realistic or representational compositions that seem like abstract works when rendered in mosaic techniques. Students come away with a fun way to delve into the abstract realm letting nature do most of the design work!

Your host will be in touch with you via email prior to the workshop to ask you to select your colour palette, confirm the workshop details, venue address, and directions. For local information about venue, accommodation, transport etc, contact your host at warep@maanz.org
