Exhibition Title: Material Musings
Creating an artwork for this exhibition, is an opportunity to think about and explore the materials we use in our work. As mosaicers, we are spoilt for choice and materials speak to us in many different ways. Whether they are natural or synthetic and manufactured, long lasting or impermanent, materials are embedded with memories. These memories may be geological, historical, cultural, political, environmental or personal.
Examples below show mosaics created from a exploring a broad range of materials and some of the memories embedded in them. There are so many materials to explore and inspire, we hope you enjoy this creative journey and enter this exhibition.
The first two explore unearthing material memories. Debbie Tully is thinking about the social history of slate in her work ‘Venerable Slate’. The harsh conditions endured by the quarry men and the movement of slate from Wales to Australia (see image below). Material memories can also be used metaphorically.
Geological processes occurring in the formation of slate and schist serve as a metaphor for the rise of neo-Nazis and fascists in Kate Butler’s installation, ‘On (The) Edge’ (see detail below).
Blue and White – Paper to Glass by Bev Plowman – Abstract mosaic, representing a misty morning on a pond.
With the theme ‘torn’, this mosaic is transformed by its changing layers of materials, from soft tissue paper, magazine and wrapping paper, to fabric, porcelain and ceramic and finally into Smalti.
Inspiration Presentation by Bev Plowman – Mosaic or not – using different materials
Extinct Race – Margaret Shaw – High fire china
The white Ibis adapted to our urban environment, by becoming a ‘bin chicken. The background alludes to the bird’s natural habitat as a memory, the bird looks back.
The white pieces of china are reminiscent of a shattered egg, pointing to the fragility of the birds very existence in the trap of the apparent convenience of a man-made environment.
Another aspect is using a cultural frame, to view materials. Waste, reuse, found and up-cycle. Environmental issues are also very relevant. Italian Artist Lady Be is one of the many artists using plastics to create art.
Check out the exciting movement created by Helen Bellino to help clean up our oceans and assist impoverished families in the the third world by incorporating ocean debris into your mosaics by being part of the ‘Ocean Debris mosaic revolution’.
