The 2020 US election marked for me the conclusion of one series and the start of another. Referencing the Trump and Biden presidencies, Truncated (2020) and Bifurcated (2021) explore social behaviour amid the onset of a worldwide pandemic and the introduction of vaccines the following year. Bifurcated also reflects pivotal shifts in my own life, including the recent birth of my first grandchild whose new life brings purpose and urgency to the central questions this series asks: What direction will we take and where will that lead?

When relations that define you cease to exist, who do you become? This is the central question in determining the placement of tesserae within my mosaic, Sleep on It. Beginning with a fragment from a Charles Gibson drawing captioned She Decides to Die in Spite of Dr Bottles, I imagined a widow’s thoughts as she considers her untethered position in Victorian society. Freed from context, the black and white lines of her deathbed extend into a quilt-like pattern of insects and swirling dishes, connecting the bondages of domesticity with her dreams of metamorphosis.
