This work is part of my Exodus series; a personal response to the refugee crisis. In the early 1900s my great-grandparents fled Lithuania with their young children. They were lucky and found asylum. The story continues. Many millions, less fortunate than my grandparents, are in flight, with the refugee situation exacerbated by the current pandemic.

The human exodus has been with us for millennia. To reflect this, I used a mix of ancient and modern materials and techniques. Hand cut marble, cleaved with the same tools used by the ancients is used in conjunction with modern materials such as plastic.

Most people’s lives are currently in turbulence. The global pandemic has resulted in some people being forced to move ‘back home’ and others are in internal flight, sheltering in place. The old normal has gone and who knows what the new normal will bring. This uncertainty is reflected in the movement of the andamento.

Perilous situations are not new. To reflect this, I work with a mix of ancient and modern materials and techniques. Hand-cut marble, cleaved with the same tools used by the Greeks and Romans, combine with modern materials such as plastic and wire.
